Troy Soldier is Abed's re-imagining of what Troy would be like as a stop action animated Christmas character. It's assumed because he is Abed's best friend that he sees him as being steadfast loyal and true, the qualities that make up a good soldier. He goes on a journey in Abed's mind to try and discover the true meaning of Christmas. He makes his first and only appearance in "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas". He is voiced by Donald Glover.

Character history[]

After Abed has what appears to be an emotional breakdown of some kind, Jeff and Britta stage an intervention for him headed up by Professor Ian Duncan and attended by the rest of the study group. Duncan convinces Abed to undergo hypnosis in order to get to the root of his problem. While he is under, he imagines that everyone has been transported to another world called "Planet Abed". There they are all transformed into Christmas cartoon versions of themselves and in Abed's mind, Troy has become "Troy Soldier". Abed wants to take the group on a journey to the North Pole to find the true meaning of Christmas. As The Christmas Wizard, Duncan convinces him to take a shortcut through "The Cave of Frozen Memories".

By the time the group reaches the cave, Baby Shirley and Jeff-in-the-box were both ejected from the therapy. Abed foils Duncan's attempts to get him to open up about his recent behavior and gets the professor to abandon the session when he reminds him of a bad childhood memory. Abed says that only those willing to help him on his journey are welcomed to join him the rest of the way. Troy Soldier is the first to step up and affirms his loyalty to Abed with their signature handshake. He tells him he is with him until the end and then exits the cave via a secret escape route. Ballerannie, Teddy Pierce and him join Abed after he tells Britta Bot she can't come with them because she tricked him into therapy. The escape route leads to a train station where they hop on a train to take them to the North Pole.

As they all settle in, Teddy Pierce excuses himself to use the bathroom. Abed shows Troy Soldier and Ballerannie landmarks the train is passing by including the "Jehovah's Witness Bay" which he added for Troy's sake. Abed then opens up about a Christmas ritual he and his mother had. Every December 9th she would visit him and they would watch Christmas cartoons. Troy Soldier points out that the day is December 9 but Abed adamantly insists that can't be right. The Christmas Wizard reappears claiming to have discovered the reasons behind his strange behavior. Abed flees not wanting to hear what he has to say and makes his way to the top of the train. The Christmas Wizard teleports up there but Troy Soldier manages to sneak up and grab him holding the wizard in place while Abed makes his way to the front of the train.

Ballerannie unhitches the conductors cab from the rest of the train allowing Abed to escape. Troy Soldier cheers him on and wishes him good luck on the rest of his journey. Abed eventually makes it to the North Pole along with Teddy Pierce who had also been inside the conductors cab. They enter Santa's workshop and find a Christmas present that was left behind. After opening the seemingly never ending boxes contained within, Abed finally reaches the last one which has a DVD copy of the TV show "Lost". Abed correctly assumes that it's a metaphor for his quest; all build up with little pay-off at the end. The Christmas Wizard then arrives and forces Abed to confront the real reason behind his actions.

After searching his dorm room, Professor Duncan found a card from Abed's mother telling him she won't be seeing him this Christmas breaking their yearly tradition. Abed goes into a catatonic state when confronted with this and literally freezes in place. It's then that Troy Soldier and the rest of the study group suddenly reappears. They denounce Duncan's assertion that Christmas is at fault for Abed's condition because of the unrealistic expectations that come with the holiday. The study group replies that Christmas is the time of the year for hope, and they can make that belief a reality by supporting each other. Duncan scoffs at this notion and the study group decide to make their point more clear by attacking him with "Christmas weapons" while they sing a song.

Abed starts to thaw as this is happening responding to his friends fighting for him. Armed with a candy cane striped nunchucks, Troy Soldier assists in the attack striking the Christmas Wizard several times with it. After the rest of the group gets their hits in as well, Ballerannie finishes off the Christmas Wizard by using the Christmas Pterodactyl against him. Abed and the group then "return" to the study room and they decide to uphold his yearly tradition with his mom and watch Christmas cartoons together in Abed's dorm room. Later, Troy continues to imagine himself as being in stop motion animated form only this time as himself and not as "Troy Soldier". He and Abed are in the study room marvelling at how detailed the food looks in this format. The two then switch heads and say "Troy and Abed in stop motion!" ("Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas").
