”
— Variety

The Community film is an upcoming film from creator Dan Harmon in partnership with Peacock which is owned by Community's original home network, NBC. Following a number of delays due to the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film is scheduled to begin production in 2025.[1]

On June 30, 2014, Zack Van Amburg of Sony Pictures Television confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a Community film was in the early stages of development. When asked if Sony had plans beyond the sixth season, Amburg said:

There's no way we're not making the movie now! I think once we make the movie, let's look up and decide how much more Community the world wants. I'd be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it.[2]

On June 7, 2015, after the sixth season wrapped, Dan Harmon, in an interview with TV Guide, commented that he was not ready to produce a movie at the end of the season:

I told Yahoo, 'I can't think about writing a movie until I miss Community,' ... They wanted to turn around and do a movie immediately, and Yahoo can get it done. They're like the NSA.[3]

On July 12, 2016, Harmon, in an interview with Larry King Now, assured that a Community movie "will happen", while expressing uncertainty on how to begin its production.[4]

On July 19, 2017, in an interview with Time, Harmon discussed the possibility of a Community movie, stating:

I recently had a conversation with a director that's the kind of guy whose weight in the industry could make that happen. For the first time in a long time, I'm actually putting thought into that again.[5]

On November 21, 2017, Harmon, in an interview with The Wrap, said that both he and Justin Lin are working to make the movie happen.[6]

On January 11, 2018, series co-star Danny Pudi stated in an interview with TV Guide that the cast were still excited about the prospect of a film, stating:

We have a little text chain, so we're always like, 'We're ready! We're ready!'[7]

On March 23, 2018, Joel McHale, in an interview with Digital Spy, mentioned that he was still hopeful about the movie, while noting that he felt bringing back former castmate Donald Glover would be vital to make the film a success, though he was unsure if this would be feasible. McHale elaborated:

"It would be great to do, I'd do it in a New York minute."[8]

On June 19, 2019, Alison Brie, in an interview with PopCulture.com, when asked about if she would want a Community movie made, stated:

Yeah, I think I would." She later added, "I mean, look, it's like, are we going to do the movie? I feel like if the Community movie ever gets made, it should just be made for Netflix, and it would be fun to do, but, I think it would be best if we could get everyone to do it, so I feel like that might be difficult.[9]

On February 15, 2020, in an "Ask Me Anything" on Reddit with director-writer-producer Jeff Baena, when questioned about news on a Community movie, Brie stated:

actually got an interesting call about it this week...stay tuned...[10][11]

On April 1, 2020, Community was added to Netflix which caused public exposure and interest to pick up significantly.[12]

On April 20, 2020, Joe Russo, in an interview with Collider, was asked if he and his brother Anthony would come back to do the movie. He stated:

We'd certainly be willing to do it. We love our Community family. That cast, we're all still very close to all of them. It'd be schedule-depending for us. But I believe there will be a Community movie, especially now that it's doing well on streaming. Someone like Netflix could step up and make the movie.[13]

On May 7, 2020, the original cast (excluding Chase) and Harmon announced that they would reunite via a livestream video for a benefit to raise money for the COVID-19 pandemic with a table read of "Cooperative Polygraphy". Pedro Pascal filled in for Walton Goggins, who was unavailable.[14]

On May 13, 2020, a few days before the table read, Gillian Jacobs talked about her belief that the entire cast would want to return for a movie. In a Q&A session immediately following the May 18 livestream video table read, the cast, including Glover, expressed interest in a movie.[15][16]

On July 15, 2021, Harmon, on Vulture's Good One podcast, confirmed that he had begun work on the script, and that any logistical issues with creating a Community movie were mostly solved. He described the challenging part of the movie was more "philosophical", namely whether the movie would be approachable to a viewer unfamiliar with the television show.[17]

On August 22, 2022, Harmon, on Newsweek's The Parting Shot with H. Alan Scott podcast, commented that a movie was "definitely going to happen" and could be expected in "between one and eight years". He said that the movie had an outline and that: "There's a product put together and pitched out in the world".[18]

On September 30, 2022, Peacock, NBC's streaming service, announced they had ordered the film for release in 2023. Harmon and Andrew Guest will write the film while McHale, Pudi, Brie, Jacobs, Rash and Jeong are all set to return, while Brown and Chase's involvement remains unknown[19]. A tweet from McHale later that day implied the involvement of Glover and Brown while also adding Gillian Anderson. Whether it was intentionally a mistake when trying to tag Jacobs or Anderson has been secretly cast is unknown.[20][21]

On January 6, 2023, Joel McHale, on the late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, revealed that the filming would begin in June of that year, although he later stated that it might get delayed because of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.[22]

On April 4, 2023, Donald Glover, in an interview with GQ, officially confirmed his involvement in the film.[23][24]

On February 1, 2024, Donald Glover confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that script was finished, stating:

I was told that the script -- literally, I was texting today -- I was told that the script was done. I haven't read it yet. It's really just a schedule thing [but] I'm in. I'm all in.[25]

On February 22, 2024, Dan Harmon, in an intereview with Variety, backtracked on what Glover said previously about the script being finished and said that the script was actually "almost done". Harmon stated:

I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always "almost done" ... What can I tell you about it — it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done.[26]
